YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
FAQs
What will my first session be like? (adults)
-
Please arrive early to your first appointment so that I can review your health history and goals prior to your massage session. Thank you for completing the online intake form before your session. It's important for me to know about any medical conditions you have as some of them may contraindicate massage. I also like to know if you're ticklish, run hot or cold, are allergic to any lotions and oils, or hate spa music so that I can better tailor the session to meet your needs. Some examples of ways that I can modify the massage include: working over the sheets in especially ticklish areas of the body, using a hypoallergenic oil, turning off the music or using additional pillows or bolsters to make you comfortable.
-
After we review your health history and goals and any questions you may have for me, I'll leave the room and give you time to undress (most clients leave their underwear on but often people prefer staying in their athletic wear - it's all okay with me!) and get under the sheets on the massage table. Most of the time, I ask clients to lie on their backs, face-up.
-
Before coming back into the room, I'll knock and ask if you are ready. Once you give me the okay, I'll come back in and re-position the bolster under your knees. After you're comfy and cozy, I'll begin the massage.
-
Depending on our discussion, I'll implement a variety of massage techniques to meet your needs. On your first visit, I'll check in with you about the amount of pressure that I'm using. I'll also ask you to turn over about halfway through the massage. Don't worry, I hold the sheet and blanket so that you are not exposed. I'll check with you again about your comfort.
-
To conclude the massage, I'll rest my hands on your head or shoulders and slowly lift them off and let you know that you're all set. At that point, I'll leave the room to wash my hands and allow you time to get dressed. After you're dressed, I'll come back in to discuss how the massage felt for you, anything that I felt, other takeaways and to book your next massage!
What are the benefits of massage?
-
Studies have found that massage helps reduce stress, pain and muscle tension. More research is needed to confirm the benefits of massage for specific conditions but there are some studies that support massage as a treatment for low back pain, anxiety, headaches, and fibromyalgia. I try to stay updated on the latest research and I'm happy to share what I've read recently with you. Keep an eye on my blog for updates!
-
I encourage you to come in and experience the benefits of massage for yourself! I am also happy to share my own experience with massage.
What massage techniques do you use?
-
There are a variety of techniques that I can use during a massage.
-
In general, long and rhythmical strokes and kneading are classified as Swedish massage. This is what most people consider "spa massage," lighter pressure with the intent to relax the body and initiate the "rest and digest" part of the nervous system.
-
Deep tissue techniques work the deeper layers of muscle tissue. Examples of these techniques include rhythmic and static compressions and friction. Deep tissue massage can effectively reduce muscle tension or tone.
-
Myofascial release works with the fascia of the body, not the muscles. No oil or lotion is used and the goal is to release adhesions through a very slow application of pressure. This can feel deep but it is not painful.
Do you use oil or lotion?
-
I make both oil and lotion available and use whatever you prefer. If you have no preference, I tend to use jojoba oil as I have found this to be a good moisturizer that doesn't leave you feeling greasy. If there is a special oil or lotion that you like to use, bring it with you and I'm happy to work with it.

What else is important for me to know?
-
Good communication is key to getting the most out of your massage. I want you to feel comfortable asking me to increase or reduce pressure or adjust the massage in any other way. This is your time and you know your body best. Allow me to make modifications so that you have the best experience possible.
